I am thinking we get on at a Train Station stop and then get off somewhere and follow the directions. Question is which is the starting point?
Just a guess on my point to throw out ideas.. "the train left the station in the heat of the night". First thing that came to mind was an old show I used to watch called In the Heat of the Night which took place in Sparta, Mississippi. I have a few thoughts ...

trover that is a good suggestion. I was thinking the Train Stop where he gets on might be in NY, since he says "From the streets in the East to the hills in Beverly." Normally any time I hear about "the streets" or "East Coast" it makes me think of NY.

Another observation on my first few listens.. "in the right place but the wrong state". Sparta, Mississippi is the location of "In the Heat of the night".. BUT the show was shot in Sparta, Illinois!!! I think I really may be on to something.

"I'm a lay down the law like tired attorneys". In Sparta, Illinois there is an L&L Tires right next to a Law Practice.

Hi everyone. Just starting to get organized. Bought the music and lyrics yesterday. looking at the first verse of song 2 right now. I am figuring that we need a starting point and it looks like that is down south.
The first verse seems to be referencing a lot of song names throughout.
Right away, I noticed a lot of Ray Charles & Georgia references.
"I'm on a midnight train, but to where, I don’t know" - Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight and the Pips
"it's like the blind leading the blind, but say it ain't so" - Ray Charles was blind - Wheezer recorded "Say it Ain't So" in Atlanta, Georgia
"hit the road jack" - Ray Charles
"Night time is the right time" Ray Charles covered this in 1958

Verse 1 - This is ALL about Ray Charles, there's like a dozen song references. Ray Charles was born in Albany, GA and died in Beverly Hills, CA, "from the steets in the east, to the hills in Beverly".
I suspect we're headed for a train stop, but not sure that it HAS to be Amtrak.
Verse 2 - He talks about his word play and to be aware of the double meanings. "this stop here, is very historic" - there is an historic train station in Albany, GA. "To walk a few blocks, will be essential to reach a destination, that's monumental" - a few blocks south is the Ray Charles Memorial. "That CD to me, is like an icon while most, just let by gones be by gones" = right around the corner is Icons Bar & Grill (b & g). "Look across the river" - The memorial is right on the Flint River. Now he says, "I'm in the right place, but the wrong state". I'm thinking he means a different Albany, and I would lean towards Albany, NY since he is a rapper and seems to be living in that area now.

Very interesting about the Beverly Hills.. did not catch that. I actually built from your idea and then went my own way. The Flint River took me to another state, Flint, Michigan. I then found "this place has alot in common"(if you look around there are a handful of places with the name "common". also some interesting statues
